WISDOM WORDS
—
To record and preserve the Yawalapitis’ language, we decided to create a database formatted to work with speech recognition software, thus making it possible for future generations of indigenous people to use these tools without having to work outside their native tongue, and also providing linguists and developers with a way to study the language.
The members of the tribe are familiar with several devices and are even considering coining terms in Yawalapiti to name objects like computers, printers, and cell phones. Preserving indigenous traditions doesn’t mean living in the past. Thanks to technology, indigenous peoples can further their education, research diseases, and preventive care, and even contact other tribes.
YAWALAPITI
HP has created a tool to ensure the record of the Yawalapiti language that was being lost over time. Only the oldest of the tribe still speak the dialect. Children and young people no longer learn the dialect. And every day, they are leaving their ancient traditions aside.
WEBSITE
We have created a desktop and mobile website where users can learn more about the project, test the beta speech recognition version, read about ancestral histories, and discover the best ink for printing what's worth printing.
SOCIAL
CONTENT
Our production team lived with the Yawalapitis for almost two weeks to bring this project to life. During this time, we recorded dozens of hours of material, including more than 30 stories about ancient warriors, 50 food and drink recipes, and some hunting and craft techniques. Part of this material became content to boost the activation on social platforms like Instagram.
THE BOOK
For the first time, the stories and traditions of the Yawalapiti people were recorded in writing. We created a DATA to recognize the native language, translate the reports into Portuguese and print all the content captured in real-time.
From the voices of the chiefs, the book Wisdom Words was born. Each page records a piece of tradition gathered in a book that holds one of Brazil's most fabulous riches: indigenous culture.
Now you know our coolest projects that came to life, how about talking about the ones that didn't yet?
